Lime loss, with a resulting increase in acidity, is a major problem for agricultural land. It occurs through acid rain, natural leaching, application of ammonium-rich fertilisers and by plants themselves making the soil more acid. Overall, the loss can amount to as much as 1,250 kg of calcium carbonate per hectare per year.

Properly planned and programmed application of lime redresses the balance, improves soil structure and is essential not just for maximum crop yields but also to release the full benefits from fertilisers and sprays. Grassland too will benefit from lime, as will the health and growth rates of the stock that graze on it.
