Bouldering Over

16th July 2010

Huntsmans are pleased to have been able to help out with the redevelopment of Chipping Campden Recreation ground. Ken & Jan Wilkins the driving force behind the redevelopment approached Huntsmans looking for help to facilitate the development. Huntsmans were pleased to be able to supply a load of large boulders which will be used as part of the "area for imaginative and informal play whilst establishing an appropriate setting for the items of play equipment and picnic tables" This is the start of phase one of the development which will be completed in September with other phases to follow.

Piping the Future

7th July 2010

Huntsmans are pleased to be supplying material to the new high pressure gas main passing through our area. Unfortunately this entails considerable volumes of stone and concrete passing through some of the more remote roads and villages where we would not normally be delivering. We abide by the rules of the contract for road use and use circular routes where possible to minimise disruption. All Huntsmans vehicles are tracked so we know their exact location and status. This is a temporary contract that should be complete by September and we apologise if our vehicle movements causes any disruption. In the meantime if there are any queries regarding Huntsmans vehicle movements please do not hesitate to contact us.

Mixing It Up

18th May 2010

Huntsmans have made further investment in plant and machinery in the form of a new Volvo chassis with a special "state of the art" facility that allows us to operate the truck either as a truckmixer for concrete or a fully sheeted tipper for delivery of stone. This combination enables more efficient operation of the vehicle.

Kineton School Visit

March 2010

Huntsmans hosted a visit on 27 April of students from the Kineton School. They were given a guided tour of the quarry and saw the products made and how we planned for the the development and restoration of the quarry taking into account all the environmental factors such as archaeology water and habitat conservation.

The students were also making a video to share with their partner school in Sri Lanka.

Driving Forward

March 2010

Despite the ravages of the recession, Huntsmans has just invested in a new Volvo A40 dump truck. The machine has a 40 tonne carrying capacity and will help reduce our carbon footprint as well as improving production.

Helping the Dovecote

October 2009

Huntsmans was happy to provide a helping hand when Naunton Dovecote Society wanted to knock down an old block shed which detracted from the setting of the dovecote.

The works are being undertaken with the support of the local charity "Friends of the Cotswolds". Huntsmans provided a lorry to remove spoil and recycle it at no cost. The company is also supplying replacement drystone walling at a significant discount on the usual market price.

Show success

September 2009

Huntsmans shared its space at Moreton Show with a group of like-minded partners. While the Dry Stone Walling Association used the opportunity to build a demo wall, the Gloucester Geology Trust ran a series of kids activities and Friends of the Cotswolds promoted its charitable work.

The focus for the company was a series of demos: of its new grab waste facility; stone cropping for building stone; the building of a cavity wall to showcase different products; and a display of roof tiles.

Mrs S Mitton from Wolverhampton won a competition to guess the weight of a tile. And the company was also a winner - a gold certificate for its trade stand. MD David Glenn is pictured receiving it (above).

One for the birds

1 August 2009

Huntsmans is one of the partners supporting a new Birds of the Cotswolds breeding atlas. The book charts significant changes in the bird life of the Cotswolds over the past 30 years.

The product of five years' of extensive field work by the North Cotswold Ornithological Society, the beautifully illustrated book presents a fascinating picture of the breeding distributions of individual species in the area today.

Huntsmans provides vital habitats for red-listed bird species such as the Corn Bunting, Linnet and Skylark.

Happy campers

July 2009

Hutsmans stepped in to help when members of the 2nd Newbury scout group found themselves short of a vehicle to ferry equipment for their summer camp.

Wall builders

16 July 2009

Pupils from the Cotswold School, Bourton-on-the-Water were coached in the skills of drystone walling by former pupil Gary Gardner, courtesy of local charity “Friends of the Cotswolds”.

The students rebuilt a stretch of wall at Huntsmans Quarries and then had a tour of the quarry to see how the stone was won.

Coppicing beside the lake

1 May 2009

An area alongside the lake at Huntmans' Naunton Quarry has been extensively coppiced as part of the company's biodiversity management plan for the site.

The work was supervised by Steve Heath of Phillip Parker Associates and was undertaken by prisioners from Leyhill Prison as part of their outplacement work programme which is an important part of the rehabilitation process.

Rallying to the cause

19 April 2009

Huntsmans once again opened its gates to the Cirencester Car Club for its annual Corinium Run. Orginally run from the 1950s to 1970s as the Mobilgas Economy Run, the event was resurrected several years ago.

The calibrated weighbridge at Naunton Quarry is a key element of the event, which is still judged on economy but with handicaps for vehicle weights. In return, the club donated £80 to the Friends of the Cotswolds.

A moving sculpture

April 2009

Huntsmans donated the stone from which students at Campden School sculpted a "sedpod" as part of their self-sufficiency programme. It was then fitting that the company should also provide the crane that was needed to manoeuvre the final piece into place.

The school has an extensive horticultural department and even makes its own drinks from fruit grown on the site.

BBC Countryfile visits Huntsmans

February 2009

Huntsmans played host in February 2009 to neighbour Adam Henson and the team from BBC Countryfile when they came to the quarry to investigate the production of Cotswold walling and roofing tiles. See video.
